Project Description

Spelthorne’s Eclipse Leisure Centre. Poplar Insulation carried out the thermal insulation package to this PassivHaus project, which recently secured the title as the largest Passivhaus leisure centre in the world.

Based in Staines-upon-Thames in Surrey, the facility boasts an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a learner pool, splash pad, spa, gym, a 6-court sports hall, multi-use sports courts, 2 fitness studios, 950 square metres of fitness space, soft play, a clip and climb area, four 3G football pitches on the roof terrace, and a café.

Passivhaus is a rigorous building standard focused on energy efficiency and thermal comfort. It aims to reduce a building’s heating and cooling needs, often to the point where a conventional heating system is not required. This is achieved through a combination of design principles and construction techniques.

Passivhaus requires a high level on thermal insulation to help minimise heat loss and gain for the building services, reducing the energy consumption.
